Current Recording Mediums
CD:
The CD is a relatively new medium for the recording of rave (electronic
dance) music but is very efficient. It stores up to 70 minutes of music
per disc and maintains a hi fidelity. There is a great debate in the
EDM/Rave community about whether there is a perceptible difference in
the sound quality of a CD versus a turntable. Most users of CD’s are
the average listener but occasionally you will find a rave DJ brave
enough to try the CD medium.
Vinyl Records:
Vinyl records are used
extensively by rave dj’s to play their music. The records are
manipulated on a turntable to produce the sounds the DJ wants. Since
djing requires fine control over the spead and release of a record the
tactile nature of records eases this for the dj. Some djs have started
to use other mediums of storage for their music, with varying levels of
success.
Past Recording Mediums
Magnetic Tape:
The magnetic tape was the original recorded medium used by dj’s to
distribute their mixes. The use of magnetic tape has declined as the
price of cd burners has decreased. Despite the disappearance of the
“mix tape” from the scene mix cd’s and recording of mixes are often
still referred to as mix tapes.
Upcoming Recording Mediums:
DVD:
The DVD is starting to appear on the horizon as the recording medium
for DJ’s to move to. DJ Spooky has begun pioneering techniques in video
and music mixing. The DVD turntable has started appearing as well but
is well out of the reach of the average DJ do to the price. This will
probably be the next big thing as the prices decrease.
